The American Water Spaniel has a wavy or curly coat of dense double layer waterproof fur. It does well in cold temperatures and icy waters due to its coat’s insulating properties. Their coat comes in a rich brown coloration.
Due to being bred for hunting, this breed is well suited for numerous dog spots such as conformation, search and rescue, therapy work, hunting tests, obedience, agility, tracking, and more! They thrive on activity and work, having a thrust to please their human. They are skilled swimmers and have lots of energy and prefer their exercise to be games where they can run such as fetch and chase.
This American Water Spaniel is great for the home. They are great with kids, having boundless energy for games while also making excellent watchdogs, barking when strangers come near. They will love playing in the back yard, going on hikes, hunting with their human, or enjoying a summer evening with the kids playing fetch.
Origin of the American Water Spaniel
It is unknown exactly where and when the American Water Spaniel was developed. However, it is known that somewhere around the Greatlakes Region of the United States, the breed was developed to hunt the plentiful waterfowl to feed families during the westward expansion by European Immigrants. It is said the origin of the breed is derived from the English Water Spaniel, the Irish Water Spaniel, and the Curly-Coated Retriever.
