About Anatolian Shepherds
Anatolian Shepherds are very independent-minded and loyal. They can be good family dogs, but it does take a firm hand to manage these dogs. They have a strong instinct to protect and they will view anyone not within their inner-circle as a threat. They are large, muscular dogs that usually have a fawn coat with a black muzzle. Most Anatolian Shepherds also have a somewhat shortened muzzle with heavy lips that cover powerful jaws.
Origin of the Anatolian Shepherd
The lineage of the Anatolian Shepherd stretches back at least 6,000 years. This breed first appeared in Turkey and they have been living and working with humans in that region for centuries. Anatolian Shepherds were bred to withstand harsh conditions while guarding livestock and family from predators and other threats.
Is a Anatolian Shepherd right for me?
If an Anatolian Shepherd is your choice of breed, you must be ready to be a strong leader. These dogs are loyal and courageous, but they need to be well-trained. An Anatolian Shepherd that is properly trained will be loving and affectionate, but it will always be suspicious of people and animals it does not know.
