Briards are recognizable for their shaggy coat of wavy hair. These dogs come with coats of black, gray or tawny. They are square-bodied and somewhat hefty, but they are also quick, agile and untiring. Being dogs that were trusted to work independently, they are intelligent, trainable and reliable. They are also very protective, especially as it concerns the children of a family. Briards tend to be outgoing and friendly with family members, but some have a tendency to be suspicious or even aggressive towards strangers.
Origin of the Briard
The Briard is an old breed with a long history. They can be traced back to 8th Century France and they have serving farmers in the area ever since. These dogs were bred to serve the double duty of both herding and guarding livestock.
Is a Briard right for me?
If a Briard is your choice of breed, you will get a loyal friend that will feel protective of you and your family. This can be a desirable trait, but training does need to focus on tempering the dog’s instinct to confront what it may consider a threat.
