Origin of the English Cocker Spaniel
This breed from the Spaniel family dates back to the 1800s and is simply called Cocker Spaniel in the United Kingdom. This active gun dog was developed to hunt birds during the time when hunting rifles were not invented yet. They were normally used to find and retrieve Eurasian woodcocks, from where the word “cocker” was derived.
