Setting is one of the English Setters defining characteristics. When this breed ‘sets”, it will focus on its prey and lay down. This is a valuable behavior for hunters as you want the dogs valuable skills to aid you in the hunt, but not the dogs predatory instincts to chase off your quarry.
Even today, Setters as an elegant dog that fit right in with almost any household. They are gentle, kind, and affectionate and are great with people of all ages including children and seniors. They are happy to join you lounging around the backyard or joining you out on the trail for a long hike. They have great social skills and play well with other dogs.
Origin of the English Setter
The English Setter originated around 500 years ago in England as the result of cross breeding the Pointer and the Springer Spaniel. They were bred as a hunting dog to “set” when they located birds that they were hunting.
