The English Springer Spaniel is characterized by its medium length double layer coat that protects this dog from the elements. They come in black, white, liver, or tan colorations and occasionally come in tricolored. They are often bred to have white markings which makes them easier to see when out hunting. They have the typical Spaniel ears which are large and hang down along the sides of the head. Their eyes are large, alert, and expressive.
The English Springer are very family oriented and love being the center of attention. They are good with children and the elderly and serve well for therapy dogs for the ill and injured. They are extremely friendly, even with strangers or people they have not yet met. The English Springer Spaniel is an energetic dog and will appreciate plenty of walks and play.
Origin of the English Springer Spaniel
The English Springer Spaniel shares its origins with other English bred spaniels. The English Springer was a bird hunting companion long before man had acquired firearms. The dog is very talented in flushing birds out of long grass and cover. This is called “Springing” which is what the dog was named after.
