The Rat Terrier is a true terrier in every sense. They are lively, energetic, funny, feisty, and are totally incapable of being boring. They are ideal farm dogs and were always intended to be a farmer’s helper. It is said that President Theodore Roosevelt even gave them the name “Rat Terrier”.
This breed makes excellent watchdogs. They will alert you when strangers or danger are present which make them a great home companion to watch over your family. The Rat Terrier is quite intelligent and is easy to train, but they do have a stubborn nature that is typical for most terrier breeds.
Origin of the Rat Terrier
The Rat Terrier was bred to kill rats and rodents wherever they could be found. They were also used for guarding chicken houses. The origin of the breed dates to the early 1900s. By the 1950s the Rat Terrier’s numbers were on the decline as farmers turned to poison to control their rodent population and by the 1970 the breed re-emerged from near extinction.
