About The Breed

The Shetland Sheepdog is characterized by their Collie like looks with a sturdy and agile build. Their head is refined and wedge-like. Their expression is intelligent, gentle, and alert. The Sheltie has a long double coat that comes in black, blue merle, and sable.
This breed is known for its intense loyalty and its gentle sensitive nature. They are often reserved around new people however they will warm up and make new friends given time. The Shetland Sheepdog is a natural with kids and much like its cousin the Collie.

Origin
The Shetland Sheepdog originated in the Shetland Islands in the northern UK which are also the home of other smaller sized animals such as Shetland Sheep and Shetland Ponies. They were developed in the early 1800s to help herd livestock and even hunt. Today, the Sheltie is one of the most popular breeds in the US but rarer in their homeland.
